For a doctor, would be John Thompson, MD, "better," Dr. John Thompson "would be acceptable. To an engineer, geologist, etc., which are usually signed his name as a person," William T. Smith, PE, addresses and could, PE, with the last ones to be used only in business correspondence. When Mr. Smith was a personal friend and as "Mr. William T. Smith" or "Mr. William T. Smith to send the invitation to a party or a Christmas card, is dealt with accordingly, "Mr. William T. Smith.

Not sure if this is the only case in the United States or universal.
Dr. John Smith or John Smith, MD
Incorrect: Dr. John Smith, MD
Incorrect: Mr. John Smith, MD
For other denominations, such as PE, I'm not sure.
John Smith, Ph.D. and Dr. John Smith
Incorrect: Dr. John Smith, Ph.D.
